Festivals feel different far from home. A box of sweets from your favourite shop, a new silk saree or a set of diyas can bring a little of home to family overseas — if it arrives on time. Here’s how to plan it.

When to order

Festival season is the busiest time for couriers and customs. Work backwards from the date you need the gift:

For Diwali, we recommend placing your request at least three to four weeks ahead. For weddings with many return gifts, start earlier.

Gift ideas that travel well

• Silk and cotton sarees, veshtis and kurtas — light, valuable and always welcome.
• Brass diyas, kuthuvilakku lamps and pooja sets — beautiful and sturdy when packed well.
• Packaged sweets and snacks — choose factory-sealed boxes with long shelf life; skip milk-based sweets for long journeys.
• Books and music — children’s books in Tamil, Hindi or Malayalam, devotional books, Carnatic music.
• Handicrafts — Golu dolls, Kondapalli toys, Tanjore paintings, Madhubani art.
• Wedding return gifts — small brass items, potli bags, silk pouches, packed in bulk.
